MANILA, PHILIPPINES - JULY 22: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his third State of the Nation Address before lawmakers at the House of Representatives on July 22, 2024 in Quezon city, Metro Manila, Philippines. President Marcos is facing significant challenges, including a notable decline in his approval ratings for his administration's failure to tame inflation and other economic issues. Moreover, his ties with the Duterte family, particularly Vice President Sara Duterte, has become strained, complicating the political landscape as both families vie for influence ahead of the 2025 midterm elections, where legislative support will be crucial for Marcos to maintain his agenda. At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will undertake a State Visit to India from August 4 to 8, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.

President Marcos will be accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos, along with a high-level delegation comprising several Cabinet Ministers, senior officials, and business representatives. He is also scheduled to visit Bengaluru before returning to the Philippines on August 8.

This will be President Marcos’s first visit to India since assuming office. During his visit, he will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi on August 5. He is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, while External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will call on him as well.

India and the Philippines established diplomatic relations in November 1949 and have since built a robust partnership across diverse sectors including trade and investment, defence and maritime security, agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and digital technologies. The two nations also engage closely through regional frameworks like India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN.

The Ministry noted that ties with the Philippines are a key pillar of India’s ‘Act East’ Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and its Indo-Pacific outlook. The visit also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries—an occasion to chart the course for future cooperation and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

India and the Philippines enjoy warm, multifaceted relations rooted in shared democratic values, historical connections, and growing strategic and economic collaboration.  (Agencies)
