Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has raised concerns over the financial losses allegedly suffered by Jammu and Kashmir due to hydropower projects and water usage charges.

Para’s remarks have once again brought the issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s water resources, power generation and financial rights into focus. The region is home to several major rivers and has significant hydropower potential, making water resources an important economic asset.

The issue of compensation and revenue generated from the utilisation of J&K’s water resources has remained a subject of discussion, particularly regarding the benefits received by the Union Territory from hydropower projects.

The MLA’s allegation raises questions about the financial arrangements governing water usage, revenue sharing and the economic benefits that should accrue to Jammu and Kashmir.

The matter is likely to draw further attention to the region’s hydropower policy and its long-standing demand for a fair share of benefits from its natural resources.
