New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s maritime defence capabilities and indigenous warship manufacturing, the Centre has approved a ₹40,000 crore project for the construction of eight next-generation stealth corvettes for the Indian Navy.

The approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) covers the development and construction of eight indigenously built corvettes, each weighing approximately 2,000 tonnes and capable of achieving speeds of up to 30 knots.

The warships will be equipped with advanced stealth technology, designed to reduce their radar visibility and enhance their operational capabilities in strategically important maritime areas.

The project will be undertaken by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), strengthening the role of India’s domestic shipbuilding industry in meeting the requirements of the armed forces.

According to the details shared, the vessels will have more than 70 per cent indigenous content, reflecting the growing emphasis on domestic defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical military platforms.

The first vessel is expected to be delivered by 2030, with the project expected to contribute to the Indian Navy’s long-term modernisation programme.
