Passage of Waqf Bills a Watershed Moment for Socio-Economic Justice: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament as a “watershed moment” in India’s ongoing journey toward socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth.

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi said the new legislations would particularly benefit those who have long remained on the margins of society, including poor Muslims, Pasmanda communities, and Muslim women.

“The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity,” the Prime Minister wrote.

PM Modi also extended his gratitude to the Members of Parliament who contributed to the discussions on the bills, both in Parliament and in the committees.

“Gratitude to all Members of Parliament who participated in the Parliamentary and Committee discussions, voiced their perspectives and contributed to the strengthening of these legislations. A special thanks also to the countless people who sent their valuable inputs to the Parliamentary committee. Yet again, the importance of extensive debate and dialogue has been reaffirmed,” he added.

Highlighting the shortcomings of the existing Waqf system, Modi said it had long suffered from a lack of transparency and accountability, which had negatively impacted the rights and interests of underprivileged Muslim communities.

“For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability. This especially harmed the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims, Pasmanda Muslims,” PM Modi noted.

He asserted that the newly passed legislations would usher in a more transparent, just, and modern framework for managing Waqf properties, adding that the government remains committed to ensuring dignity and justice for every citizen.

“We will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. On a larger note, we remain committed to prioritising the dignity of every citizen. This is also how we build a stronger, more inclusive and more compassionate India,” he concluded.
