Parliamentary Panel Reviews Ladakh’s Border Security, Environment and Water Challenges

Shashi Tharoor-led committee meets LG Saxena during strategic Ladakh visit

Leh, June 26: A Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, met Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to review key issues affecting the Union Territory, including border security, environmental concerns and water scarcity.

The committee, currently on a four-day visit to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, held detailed discussions with the Lieutenant Governor on the region’s strategic and developmental priorities.

During the meeting, LG Saxena briefed the panel on Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem, the growing challenge of water scarcity and the initiatives being implemented to address these issues. He highlighted projects such as Project Him Sarovar, the construction of rock check dams under the Sindhu Jal Samridhi Abhiyan, and large-scale plantation drives aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability.

According to the LG, the parliamentary panel appreciated these initiatives and assured full support for efforts to tackle the region’s unique geographical and ecological challenges.

The committee’s visit is part of its broader review of India’s border security, including the situation along the India-China and India-Pakistan frontiers. During the tour, members visited Jammu, Srinagar, Kargil and Leh to assess strategic infrastructure, border management and security preparedness.

The visit also follows the recent tour of the 8th Central Pay Commission to Ladakh, where members interacted with employees’ unions and discussed issues concerning Union Territory government staff.(Agencies)
