SRINAGAR, September 28: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has stepped up his criticism of the BJP over the delay in restoring statehood to the Union Territory, questioning why the Centre has not fulfilled its earlier assurances.
Omar has repeatedly argued that J&K was promised restoration of statehood after delimitation and Assembly elections. In the Assembly, he said the government was now seeking a clear decision on the issue and urged BJP legislators to debate and vote on the statehood resolution rather than disrupt proceedings.
The Chief Minister has also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier assurance, describing it as “Modi ka waada”, and questioned why the promise has not yet been implemented.
His remarks come amid heated exchanges between the ruling National Conference and BJP legislators in the J&K Assembly over the resolution seeking immediate restoration of full statehood.
