New Delhi, November 4: Air pollution levels in the national capital continued to deteriorate, with several areas of Delhi recording severe air quality on Tuesday as the city experienced another spell of hazardous pollution during November.

Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 350 at 4 pm on Tuesday, placing it in the ‘Very Poor’ category. The reading marked a further deterioration compared with Monday, while at least eight monitoring stations across the city recorded AQI levels falling into the ‘Severe’ category.

According to monitoring agencies, pollution levels are expected to worsen further, with the remaining parts of the city also facing the possibility of entering the severe category if the deteriorating trend continues.

The situation has raised concerns over public health, particularly for children, elderly people and those suffering from respiratory or heart-related conditions. Prolonged exposure to high levels of air pollution can aggravate breathing difficulties and increase the risk of other health complications.

Delhi Faces Another Spell of Hazardous Air Pollution

The deterioration in air quality comes during the winter pollution season, when a combination of weather conditions and emissions can contribute to the accumulation of pollutants over the national capital.

Low wind speeds, atmospheric conditions that limit the dispersal of pollutants, vehicular emissions, construction dust and other sources of pollution can contribute to worsening air quality during this period.

The AQI level of 350 falls within the Very Poor category under India’s air quality classification, which covers readings between 301 and 400. An AQI above 400 is classified as Severe, indicating a higher level of pollution and increased health risks.

Monitoring Agencies Warn of Further Deterioration

With at least eight areas already recording severe pollution, monitoring agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation. Forecasts indicate that air quality across more parts of Delhi could deteriorate further in the coming period.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly during periods of high pollution. Limiting prolonged outdoor physical activity and following health advisories can help reduce exposure.

The worsening pollution once again highlights the challenge of controlling air quality in Delhi during the winter months, when multiple pollution sources and unfavourable weather conditions combine to affect the health and daily lives of millions of residents.
