Amid growing anticipation over a second round of US-Iran peace talks expected to take place in Islamabad, Iranian state media has stated that no delegation from Tehran has arrived in Pakistan so far. The statement comes amid heightened diplomatic uncertainty and ongoing internal discussions within Iran’s political and religious leadership regarding its response to recent developments, including the reported US Navy seizure of an Iranian container vessel.
According to reports, Iran’s state television—widely seen as reflecting the views of hardline factions—indicated that the situation remains under review and no official confirmation has been made regarding the dispatch of a negotiating team.
No Iranian official has yet confirmed any travel plans to Islamabad, where Pakistani authorities have reportedly remained on standby for several days in anticipation of the talks.
On the US side, JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation. However, Tehran has not announced who will head its team. In earlier rounds of discussions, Iran was represented by Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
Tensions remain high, with strong rhetoric from both sides. Former US President Donald Trump has warned of severe consequences if an agreement is not reached before the ceasefire deadline, while Iranian officials have claimed they possess “new cards on the battlefield” that have yet to be revealed.
The two-week ceasefire, which began on April 8, is expected to be extended if negotiations move forward. The White House has confirmed JD Vance’s participation, but Iran continues to withhold details regarding its delegation.
Despite the uncertainty, Pakistani officials remain hopeful that Iran will send representatives soon, allowing talks to proceed in Islamabad.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held discussions with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty on the evolving regional situation as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements ahead of the proposed talks.
Security has been significantly tightened in Islamabad, with thousands of personnel deployed and enhanced patrols in key areas, including routes leading to the airport, amid heightened alertness ahead of possible diplomatic developments. (Agency)
