The Doda–Kishtwar stretch of NH-244 at Prem Nagar has been reopened for one-way traffic after a massive flash flood triggered by heavy rainfall early Monday morning blocked the highway and left several vehicles buried under mud and debris.
The flash flood caused extensive damage to the affected stretch, trapping several cars, scooters and trucks beneath a thick layer of mud, boulders and slush, leading to a temporary suspension of vehicular movement on the strategic highway.
Following the incident, the District Administration, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Traffic Police, National Highways authorities and local residents launched a coordinated rescue and clearance operation. Heavy machinery was pressed into service to remove the accumulated debris, while stranded commuters were safely evacuated from the affected area.
Officials confirmed that no loss of life or injuries were reported in the incident.
After several hours of intensive restoration work, authorities reopened the highway for one-way traffic, providing much-needed relief to commuters and essential transport services. However, restoration work is still underway, with damaged vehicles yet to be removed completely from the site.
NH-244 serves as a vital road link connecting Kishtwar district with Jammu and is currently witnessing increased traffic due to the ongoing Machail Yatra. Authorities have advised commuters to drive cautiously and follow traffic regulations, as road clearance operations continue and intermittent disruptions may occur.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged travelers to stay updated on weather conditions before undertaking journeys through the Chenab Valley.
