Silchar, Mar 14: Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Centre is working to minimise the impact of global conflicts on the people, while alleging that the opposition Indian National Congress was acting “irresponsibly” by trying to create panic in the country.
Addressing a public meeting in Silchar, Assam, the Prime Minister alleged that the Congress had neglected the Northeast and allowed a border arrangement during Independence that cut off Barak Valley from sea access.
“As the world faces wars, our effort is to minimise their impact on the people of the country. Congress should have acted as a responsible political party, but it failed to do so and is instead trying to create panic among the people,” he said.
“They have no vision for either Assam or the nation and only know how to abuse Modi, spread rumours and mislead people,” he added.
Modi said Barak Valley was once an important hub of trade and commerce.
“Just as Congress neglected the Northeast, it also played a major role in weakening Barak Valley. When India became independent, Congress allowed a border to be drawn that cut off Barak Valley’s access to the sea,” he alleged.
He added that the region, once known as an industrial centre, lost much of its strength over time. “For decades after Independence, Congress governments remained in power, yet the region saw little development. Today, the Bharatiya Janata Party government is working to change that,” he said.
The Prime Minister also alleged that the Congress had misled the youth of the state towards violence and terrorism, while the BJP government has worked to create opportunities for them.
“Where Congress stops thinking, we start working,” he said, adding that the BJP’s approach is to prioritise regions and communities that were left behind in development. (Agencies)
