PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday alleged that several leaders and workers of her party were placed under house arrest to prevent them from holding peaceful protests against the Jammu and Kashmir government over alleged “backdoor appointments.”

In a post on X, the former Chief Minister claimed the National Conference (NC) government was acting in coordination with the police to suppress democratic protests whenever youth or political parties raised issues such as reservation rationalisation and alleged backdoor recruitment.

Mehbooba said the government’s “hypocrisy” had been exposed, alleging that while it claims the police department is beyond its control on issues of accountability, it uses police action to stop peaceful demonstrations.

The PDP has accused the government of making appointments in several departments through outsourcing agencies without following a transparent recruitment process.

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir government rejected the allegations. On Sunday, Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, along with ministers Sakina Ittoo and Javed Dar, addressed a press conference to deny the claims made by the opposition.

Meanwhile, police prevented PDP leaders and workers from staging a protest march at Srinagar’s Press Enclave, stopping the demonstration before it could proceed.(Agencies)
