Major Anti Bovine Smuggling Sweep in Kishtwar: 130 Bovines Rescued, 10 Arrested Across Mountain Routes

Jammu/Kishtwar, May 10, 2026: Continuing its intensified drive against bovine smuggling, Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kishtwar rescued 130 bovines and arrested 10 alleged smugglers during multiple operations conducted over the past two days, including fresh action taken days after protests over an alleged sacrilegious incident in Simbol Chatroo.

In the latest and biggest operation carried out in the jurisdiction of Police Post Thakrie, police rescued 86 bovines and arrested six accused allegedly involved in illegally transporting cattle towards the Kashmir Valley through remote mountain routes.

According to police, during patrolling in the Sarawan–Thathri Top area, a police team received reliable information regarding the movement of bovine smugglers transporting bovine animals from the high ridges of Talen Top towards Zaitel Dhar via Kathkai Top.

Acting swiftly, a joint team of police and SOG personnel led by Incharge Police Post Thakrie PSI Basharat Hussain under the supervision of Additional SP Kishtwar Pardeep Singh-JKPS and DySP Headquarters Dr. Ishan Gupta-JKPS reached the Tarnalan area and intercepted six accused persons.

The arrested accused were identified as Farooq Ahmed Mir son of Abdul Gani, resident of Ludna, Tehsil Gundna, District Doda; Yasir Hamid son of Abdul Samad, resident of Ludna, Tehsil Gundna, District Doda; Mohd Saleem son of Nisar Ahmed, resident of Bagla Bharat, Tehsil Udyanpur Bagla, District Doda; Maneer Hussain son of Ghulam Mohammad, resident of Jijawan, Tehsil Bagla, District Doda; Mohd Hanief son of Qasim Din, resident of Bharat, Tehsil Dali Bagla, District Doda; and Jhangir Ahmed son of Ghulam Nabi, resident of Gundna, Tehsil Gundna, District Doda.

Police said 86 bovine animals were being transported without valid permission or transportation documents. In this connection, FIR No. 104/2026 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Kishtwar and investigation has been initiated.

Police said that in separate operations conducted a day earlier in Chatroo and Thakrie areas, 44 bovines were rescued and four smugglers were arrested. Among them, 36 bovines were rescued near Upper Zaitel after police intercepted two accused — Nazir Ahmed son of Abdul Samad Hajam and Raies Ahmed son of Abdul Rashid Malik, both residents of Bagla Bharat, District Doda. Two other accused, Akther Hussain of Nicha Rahal and Farheed Ahmad of Kalamsoi Singapore Chatroo, were arrested in separate cases registered at Police Station Chatroo after police rescued eight more bovines.

Senior Superintendent of Police Naresh Singh reiterated that District Police Kishtwar remains committed towards curbing bovine smuggling and other unlawful activities. He appealed to the general public not to indulge in any such illegal acts which may create law and order problems and urged citizens to cooperate with police by sharing any information regarding such activities.
