Lt General Dhiraj Seth has officially taken charge as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after an illustrious service of over 40 years in the Indian Armed Forces, officials said.
Gen Seth, an accomplished officer from the Armoured Corps and an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, was commissioned in December 1986. With nearly four decades of service, he brings extensive operational, strategic, and leadership experience to the top post.
He is noted for the rare distinction of commanding two major operational Army commands along the western front, reflecting his strong operational background. Prior to assuming charge as Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
During his career, Gen Seth has held key command, staff, and strategic appointments, including leadership roles in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and command of elite strike formations. He has also headed important formations such as the Southern Command and South Western Command, playing a significant role in operational readiness and modernization efforts.
The defence ministry noted that his contributions have been crucial in aligning the Army’s operational requirements with emerging technologies and future warfare challenges. He has also been involved in long-term capability development and force restructuring initiatives at Army Headquarters.
Gen Seth has undergone advanced military training, including the Higher Command Course, National Defence College, and the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, reflecting his strong strategic outlook.
His appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on modernization, self-reliance, and strengthening border security amid evolving global security challenges.
