Jammu, May 13: Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma has been nominated to two key committees of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly for the year 2026-27, reflecting the BJP’s significant role in the functioning of the House and its oversight mechanisms.
As per a series of notifications issued by the J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat on May 12, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather constituted several House committees, including financial and subject committees, for the period ending March 31, 2027.
LoP Sunil Sharma has been nominated as a member of the powerful General Purposes Committee, a high-level panel that advises the Speaker on important administrative and procedural matters related to the functioning of the House. The committee includes senior legislators cutting across party lines and is chaired ex-officio by the Speaker.
The committee comprises senior members including Surjeet Singh Slathia, Mir Saifullah, Nazir Ahmad Khan (Gurezi), Ali Mohammad Dar, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Yudhvir Sethi, Dr. Rameshwar Singh and Randir Singh.
In another important nomination, Sunil Sharma has also been included in the Rules Committee, one of the most influential panels of the Assembly tasked with examining amendments, interpretation and implementation of Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.
The Rules Committee, also chaired ex-officio by the Speaker, includes Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mubarik Gul, Justice Hasnain Masoodi, Muzaffar Iqbal Khan, Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, Arvind Gupta and Surinder Kumar besides the LoP.
Political observers believe the inclusion of the Leader of Opposition in these crucial committees gives the opposition a direct role in legislative oversight, procedural reforms and institutional decision-making within the Assembly.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Secretariat also constituted several other committees including the Public Accounts Committee, Estimates Committee, Public Undertakings Committee, Committee on Privileges, Committee on Petitions, Ethics Committee, Environment Committee, Library Committee, Government Assurances Committee and House Committee through separate notifications issued from Srinagar.
