Kishtwar Police Destroy Illegal Opium Cultivation in Paddar; Two NDPS Cases Registered

Kishtwar, May 23, 2026: Continuing its intensified campaign against the drug menace under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Kishtwar Police busted illegal opium poppy cultivation in the Paddar area and registered two separate cases under the NDPS Act at Police Station Atholi.

According to police, acting on reliable information regarding illegal cultivation of opium poppy in the Paddar region, a police team led by SHO Police Station Atholi under the supervision of SDPO Atholi conducted targeted raids in the area.

During the first operation at Village Karthie in Tehsil Atholi Paddar, police found Mohd. Akbar, son of Ghulam Qadir, allegedly involved in illegal cultivation of opium poppy. Consequently, FIR No. 11/2026 under Sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act was registered. During the operation, approximately 25 kilograms of opium poppy plants were recovered and destroyed on the spot following due procedure.

In another operation at Village Kijaie, police reportedly found Abdul Latief Bichoo, son of Abdul Aziz Bichoo, and Abdul Kabir, son of Ghulam Rasool Shah, involved in similar illegal cultivation activities. Following the recovery, FIR No. 12/2026 under Sections 8/18 of the NDPS Act was registered.

Police said approximately 35 kilograms of opium poppy plants were recovered from Abdul Latief Bichoo, while nearly 25 kilograms were recovered from Abdul Kabir. The recovered cultivation was destroyed on the spot in accordance with established procedures.

SSP Kishtwar stated that the anti-drug campaign will continue with full force and warned that individuals involved in illegal cultivation, drug trafficking, or supporting narcotics-related activities will face strict legal action. He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and share information regarding drug-related activities, assuring that the identity of informers would remain confidential.

The police further reiterated their commitment to maintaining continuous field monitoring and strict enforcement measures aimed at curbing illegal cultivation and dismantling drug networks to build a drug-free society.
