London, Jun 22: British Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, setting in motion a leadership transition process within the ruling party.
Starmer confirmed that he will continue in office until a new leader is elected, ensuring an orderly handover of power. He also pledged his full support to his successor to maintain stability in government.
The Labour Party is expected to begin its leadership selection process soon, with nominations likely to open on July 9 and the final decision expected before the parliamentary summer recess on July 17. The new leader is anticipated to take charge by September.
During his address in London, Starmer said he accepted the decision of his parliamentary party and reiterated that his decisions were always made in the national interest. He also informed that he had spoken to King Charles III regarding his resignation.
Reports suggest that Andy Burnham is among the frontrunners in the leadership race following a recent political shift in the UK.
Starmer, who led Labour to a major election victory in 2024, acknowledged his time in office and said he looks forward to spending more time with his family after stepping down.
