Srinagar, October 15: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered a ban on fuel-powered motorboats, jet skis and motorised shikaras operating on Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake until further orders, citing concerns over environmental pollution and the protection of the lake’s fragile ecosystem.
The court’s directive aims to reduce water pollution caused by petrol- and diesel-powered vessels and safeguard the ecological health of one of Kashmir’s most popular tourist destinations.
However, government boats engaged in emergency services, rescue operations and public safety activities have been exempted from the restrictions.
The court has also directed the concerned authorities to explore environmentally friendly alternatives, including electric and solar-powered boats, while developing a comprehensive policy to balance tourism activities with environmental conservation.
Dal Lake, a major attraction for tourists visiting Kashmir, has been facing environmental challenges, including pollution and ecological degradation.
The restrictions will remain in force until further orders from the court.
