Heavy rainfall in Nepal’s Gandak basin has pushed the Gandak River to a record 91.25 metres at Bagaha in Bihar’s West Champaran, causing embankment breaches and flooding in several villages, including Shivrajpur and Nautan. Flooding has also affected parts of Gopalganj and Saran districts.
Nepal has reported 27 deaths in 542 rain-related incidents, while 227 houses have been destroyed. Several rivers, including the Bagmati, have also overflowed following intense rainfall.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inspected affected areas and directed officials to intensify relief and flood-control measures. Authorities have reportedly repaired 169 seepage points as water levels begin to recede.
However, residents have raised concerns over the recurring annual floods and called for permanent solutions to the problem, including issues linked to the 1959 Gandak Agreement.
