New Delhi, Feb 9: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday observed that “Gunda Raj” is unacceptable and directed a lawyer, who alleged that he was physically assaulted inside a district court courtroom here on February 7, to approach the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

The lawyer sought urgent listing of his plea before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N V Anjaria. He told the court that the incident took place at the Tis Hazari court during proceedings before Additional District Judge Harjit Singh Pal.

“I was appearing on behalf of the accused when the complainant’s advocate, along with several goons, attacked me inside the courtroom. I was assaulted while the judge and other court staff were present,” the lawyer alleged.

Responding to the complaint, the CJI asked whether the incident had been brought to the notice of the Delhi High Court Chief Justice and advised the lawyer to submit a written representation. “Write a letter to the Chief Justice and mark it to me as well. Let the High Court Chief Justice take cognisance of the matter. Action will be taken on the administrative side. This kind of ‘Gunda Raj’ is not acceptable to us. It reflects a failure of the rule of law,” the CJI said.

The bench directed the lawyer to move the jurisdictional High Court for appropriate action. (Agencies)
