According to doctors, she will require multiple surgeries for recovery, while a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help cover her medical expenses.

The woman, identified as Jigisha alias Soniya Gajera, was seriously injured when a firearm accidentally discharged on April 4 inside Mezo Grocery and Deli in Bossier City.

Police said the weapon was reportedly in the possession of her husband, Sharad Gajera, when it went off at close range, with the bullet passing through her mouth and exiting through her jaw.

Sharad Gajera was arrested on April 21 after surrendering to authorities following a warrant. He faces charges related to the illegal use of a weapon.

Investigators said the couple was in discussions with store owner Vince Mezo regarding a potential purchase of the business when the incident took place.

While authorities have termed the firing as accidental, the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under scrutiny. Eyewitnesses told local media that the couple was talking with the store owner when a sudden gunshot was heard.

Several witnesses have questioned the claim that the firing was “accidental,” pointing out the dangers of carrying a loaded firearm inside a public commercial establishment.

Soniya remains in critical condition at a hospital in Bossier City, where doctors say her injuries are life-altering. The bullet impact has caused extensive damage to her jaw, teeth, and lower lip, leaving her unable to eat normally. She is currently on assisted breathing support and receiving artificial nutrition, with her condition described as highly fragile.

Medical experts have stated that her recovery will be long and complicated, requiring multiple surgeries, including jaw reconstruction, facial reconstruction, and dental implants, according to her family members. However, even after extensive treatment, a full recovery is not guaranteed, they added.

Authorities have not shared any details regarding the couple’s immigration status.

Meanwhile, members of the community have started a crowdfunding campaign to help cover her rising medical expenses. The fundraiser has set a goal of $200,000 (approximately Rs 1.9 crore), highlighting Soniya’s personal struggles and determination. The appeal mentions that she recently moved to the United States in search of a better future and aspired to become a cosmetologist while working part-time.

It also refers to her difficult past, including the loss of her younger brother and her responsibility of caring for her father during his long illness. Supporters describe her as a strong-willed individual now facing a severe crisis far from home.

As of April 24, the campaign has raised $9,135 (around Rs 8.6 lakh) from 51 donors — still only a small portion of the required amount.
