Jammu, November 5: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday emphasised that the purpose of education should go beyond securing high marks and academic achievements, stating that educational institutions must focus on developing responsible citizens with strong values, independent thinking and a sense of social responsibility.
Addressing the annual Honour and Excellence Awards ceremony at the Convention Centre in Jammu, the Chief Minister said that academic success alone should not define a student’s capabilities or contribution to society.
He stressed that education must nurture curiosity, critical thinking, discipline and moral values, enabling students to make informed decisions and contribute positively to the nation.
Omar Abdullah also encouraged students to embrace emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), while cautioning them against relying on such tools to bypass the actual learning process.
Highlighting the changing educational landscape, he said students today have access to unprecedented technological resources but must learn to use them responsibly.
The Chief Minister further urged students not to hesitate in asking questions, observing that curiosity and the willingness to learn are essential for personal and intellectual growth.
During the event, he felicitated meritorious students, including those who secured more than 99 per cent marks, and honoured employees for completing 25 years of service.
Reiterating the broader objective of education, Omar Abdullah said the focus should remain on producing individuals who are not only academically accomplished but also responsible, ethical and committed citizens.
