Jammu, February 17, 2026: In a decisive move against hardened criminals, the District Magistrate Kishtwar, Pankaj Kumar Sharma (JKAS), has booked a notorious burglar and drug peddler under the stringent provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978.
Acting on a detailed dossier submitted by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kishtwar, the District Magistrate issued a detention order against Riyaz Ahmed S/o Mohd. Iqbal Sheikh R/o Indra Nagar, Tehsil and District Kishtwar. The order was passed after a thorough examination of records which revealed that the accused’s activities were highly prejudicial to the maintenance of public order.
According to official sources, the accused is a habitual offender with involvement in multiple criminal cases, including burglary, vehicle theft, violent assault, house trespass, assault on women and children, and possession and trafficking of narcotic substances, including heroin. Despite being booked in several FIRs, he allegedly continued his unlawful activities after securing bail on various occasions.
The District Magistrate observed that the ordinary law had failed to deter the accused from his criminal conduct, which had created fear among peace-loving citizens and posed a serious threat to the youth by promoting substance abuse.
Considering the gravity and repetitive nature of his offences, the District Magistrate deemed it necessary to detain him under the PSA to prevent further acts prejudicial to public order. The accused has been taken into custody and lodged at District Jail Bhaderwah.
The District Administration Kishtwar reiterated its “Zero Tolerance Policy” against anti-social elements, thieves, and drug peddlers, warning that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb public peace and harmony in the district.
