Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of maintaining silence over repeated claims by former US President Donald Trump that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Gandhi questioned why the Prime Minister has not responded even once to Trump’s persistent assertions, calling the matter one of serious national importance.
“You talk about Operation Sindoor being underway, and on one hand, you claim victory. Yet, Donald Trump has said at least 25 times that he stopped Operation Sindoor. Kuch na kuch toh daal mein kaala hai na,” Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament.
Former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for averting a potential conflict between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, even stating that his intervention prevented a nuclear escalation.
“They shot down five planes in the last attack… I called them and said no more trade if you do this. They are both powerful nuclear nations… and I stopped it,” Trump said in a recent speech.
Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday for his silence on Trump’s assertions, calling it a matter of national importance.
“The Prime Minister has not made a single statement, while Donald Trump has made this claim 25 times,” Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament. “Those who call themselves patriots just ran away,” he added, targeting the ruling party.
“Of course, Trump did the ceasefire. That is the fact. How can the Prime Minister respond? What will he say—that Trump did the ceasefire? He can’t say that. But this is the truth, and the whole world knows it,” Gandhi said.
Congress leaders have been demanding that the government respond to Trump’s statements and also address issues such as the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the military operations that followed.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh had earlier accused Prime Minister Modi of dodging parliamentary debate on the issue. “President Trump has reached the silver jubilee of his ceasefire claim. He has trumpeted it 25 times in the last 73 days, while the Prime Minister remains completely silent—finding time only to travel abroad and undermine democratic institutions at home,” Ramesh wrote on X.
With Parliament facing repeated disruptions over various issues, including the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, the Congress has insisted that the Prime Minister address both Houses and clarify India’s official position, particularly in light of Trump’s repeated remarks on foreign mediation.
