JAMMU, September 25: Congress workers and senior party leaders staged a protest in Jammu demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration was part of the Congress’s nationwide campaign over its concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protesters gathered near the Election Commission office and attempted to march towards the premises while raising slogans against the CEC. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in large numbers and barricades were placed to prevent the protesters from proceeding further.
Congress MP and AICC general secretary Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain led the demonstration. Several senior Congress leaders, including former ministers and legislators, participated. Reports said some protesters briefly clashed with security personnel, while several party leaders and workers were detained and taken away in buses.
The Congress has been demanding action against Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing political controversy surrounding the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has maintained that its decisions on the SIR process were taken unanimously.
The issue also echoed inside the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, where Congress MLAs raised slogans and displayed banners demanding Kumar’s resignation. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather directed the protesting members to return to their seats
