Congress to Challenge Waqf Amendment Bill in Supreme Court: Jairam Ramesh
New Delhi: The Congress has announced its decision to challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Supreme Court after it was passed by Parliament in the early hours of Friday.
Congress MP and General Secretary in charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, took to social media platform X to declare the party’s intent. He highlighted Congress’ ongoing legal battles against several laws, including the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) of 2019, amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005, and modifications to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024). The party is also actively intervening to uphold the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
“The INC’s challenge of the CAA, 2019, is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s challenge of the 2019 amendments to the RTI Act, 2005, is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s challenge to the validity of the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC’s intervention to uphold the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991, is being heard in the Supreme Court. The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” Ramesh stated.
Expressing confidence in the party’s legal stance, Ramesh reiterated Congress’ commitment to opposing what it perceives as unconstitutional actions by the Modi government.
“We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Government on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” he added.
Bill Passed After Heated Debate
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed in Parliament following a marathon debate. The Rajya Sabha approved the legislation after a late-night session, with 128 votes in favor and 95 against. Earlier, the Lok Sabha had passed the bill past midnight on Wednesday.
The bill, introduced after recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee, seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 to enhance the administration and management of Waqf properties in India. It aims to improve the efficiency of Waqf boards, streamline the registration process, and integrate technology for better record management.
