Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired the 27th Board of Directors meeting of the Jammu & Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) at SKICC to review ongoing conservation efforts and discuss key policy, administrative, and infrastructure-related issues concerning Dal, Nigeen, Khushalsar and Gilsar lakes.
The Board reviewed action taken on previous decisions and assessed the progress of major restoration and conservation projects, including the Integrated Management Plan for the Dal-Nigeen lake ecosystem, eco-development of lake hamlets, sewerage infrastructure improvement, and lake cleaning operations aimed at enhancing ecological health.
CM Omar Abdullah stressed that conservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s lakes requires strong institutional coordination, scientific planning, and timely execution. He directed concerned departments to speed up ongoing projects while ensuring strict compliance with environmental safeguards and statutory procedures.
The meeting also discussed strengthening the LCMA, modernising sewerage management systems, and improving conservation measures for Khushalsar and Gilsar lakes. The Chief Minister asked that proposals requiring further refinement be revised and resubmitted after incorporating suggestions made during the meeting.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting the fragile lake ecosystem, he said conservation work must be guided by scientific assessment, environmental sustainability, and long-term public interest.
He further instructed officials to ensure regular monitoring of ongoing projects and stronger inter-departmental coordination for visible improvements in lake management across Jammu and Kashmir.
