A businessman was allegedly murdered by his wife and teenage daughter in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, sending shockwaves through the Barbaruah neighbourhood.
Police have arrested the wife, the daughter, and two others — including a minor — in connection with the case.
Uttam Gogoi, 52, was found dead in his home on July 25. What initially appeared to be a robbery was later revealed to be a premeditated murder involving members of his own family.
According to police, Gogoi’s wife, Boby Sonowal Gogoi, and their 16-year-old daughter — a Class 9 student — played key roles in planning the murder.
The teenage girl was reportedly in a relationship with 21-year-old Dipjyoti Buragohain, one of the two non-family members arrested.
The woman and her daughter allegedly paid Dipjyoti Buragohain and the minor a substantial amount of money, along with gold jewellery, to carry out the murder.
Police said they have recovered the gold jewellery used in the transaction.
“They tried to stage the crime as a robbery to mislead the investigation, but inconsistencies in their statements and forensic evidence revealed their involvement,” said Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Reddy.
The case has stunned the quiet neighbourhood of Lahon Gaon, where Uttam Gogoi was a well-respected figure. The arrests have sparked protests in Barbaruah, with locals demanding strict punishment for those involved.
SSP Reddy, who is leading the investigation, said police are still interrogating the suspects to determine the exact motive behind the crime.
“The investigation is ongoing. We are questioning the suspects thoroughly, and once complete, we will uncover the motive behind this murder,” he said. (Agencies)
