NEW DELHI, September 28: A throwback video of actor Akshay Kumar performing a handstand walk at a live event has once again drawn attention to his fitness and body-control skills. The video was recently shared by actor and VJ Salil Acharya.
Fitness expert and consultant dietitian Garima Goyal explained that a moving handstand requires much more than upper-body strength. Unlike a stationary handstand, the exercise involves shifting body weight from one hand to the other while moving forward, making coordination and balance crucial.
The movement places significant demands on the shoulders, arms, upper back, wrists and forearms, while a strong core helps keep the body properly aligned. Goyal also highlighted proprioception, or the body’s ability to sense its position in space, as an important component of the skill.
According to the expert, handstand training can help develop upper-body strength, shoulder stability, core control, balance and body awareness. However, a moving handstand is considered an advanced skill and beginners are advised to build up gradually through basic strength exercises, planks and wall-supported handstands before attempting more difficult variations.
The expert also stressed safety, noting that incorrect falls can place stress on the wrists, shoulders, neck and head. Proper supervision, adequate space and appropriate progression are therefore important when learning the movement.
