The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered the immediate withdrawal of a controversial book from government school libraries after allegations that it contained anti-national content and glorified separatist leaders and terrorists.

The book, titled “Great Personalities and Legends,” was reportedly supplied to schools under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme. The controversy erupted after the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Forum (JKPF) alleged that the publication portrayed separatist leaders and terrorists as “great personalities” and “legends” of Jammu and Kashmir.

The issue gained political attention after Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma raised the matter during a press conference, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the book, a high-level inquiry, strict action against those responsible, and the dismissal of the School Education Minister.

Confirming the government’s action, Commissioner Secretary, School Education Department, Ram Niwas Sharma, said all copies of the book had been withdrawn from schools with immediate effect.

He said the government has initiated proceedings against everyone involved in the publication, approval, procurement, and distribution of the book. According to officials, the publication was supplied to schools in June 2026 and was officially withdrawn on July 3.

The government’s decision follows widespread criticism from opposition parties and several organisations, which alleged that the book promoted an anti-national narrative and was unfit for inclusion in school libraries.

School Education Minister Sakina Itoo was unavailable for comment when the report was filed. (Agencies)
