Earthquake hits Kashmir Valley, no damage reported

Srinagar, February 2: A moderate earthquake with its epicentre in Budgam district shook parts of the Kashmir Valley early Monday morning, officials said.

The tremors were felt around 5:35 am, triggering brief panic among residents in several areas as people rushed out of their homes. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, with Budgam identified as the epicentre, according to data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), as reported by Kashmir Weather.

Officials told news agency that initial reports indicated no loss of life or major damage to property.

“The situation is being closely monitored. So far, no casualties or significant damage have been reported from any district of Jammu and Kashmir,” a senior official from the State Disaster Management Authority said.

The earthquake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and was felt in areas close to the epicentre, including Charar-i-Sharief, Pulwama, Srinagar, and Shopian. Eyewitnesses said the shaking was strong but brief, lasting a few seconds.

Authorities have advised people to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
