New Delhi: Political activist Yogendra Yadav and All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora were among protesters detained by Delhi Police during demonstrations in the national capital over issues concerning the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The detention took place amid heightened security around Jantar Mantar, where student groups, civil society activists and political representatives had gathered. Police had earlier said that permission for the proposed demonstration had not been granted.
Reports said that several other protesters were also taken into custody and later released. Those detained included activists and political figures such as Prashant Bhushan, Dipankar Bhattacharya and Anjali Bhardwaj.
A separate allegation has emerged regarding the detention of Neha Bora, with protesters and social-media posts claiming that some women police personnel involved in detaining her were not wearing visible nameplates. Such claims could not be independently established from the reports reviewed.
The demonstrations are linked to demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and objections raised by protest organisers over the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR exercise. Police and protesters have offered differing accounts regarding the legality and circumstances of the gatherings.
