Kotdwar: Gym owner Deepak Kumar, who became known publicly as “Mohammad Deepak” after an incident involving a Muslim shopkeeper earlier this year, has been arrested by Uttarakhand Police over allegations of abusing, assaulting and threatening a local businessman.
According to police, the action followed a complaint filed by businessman Sanjeev Tonk at Kotdwar Kotwali. Tonk alleged that Deepak misbehaved with him, used abusive language, assaulted him and threatened to kill him.
Police initially registered a case under Sections 351(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During the investigation, police said CCTV footage, photographs and other evidence were examined, following which Sections 196 and 115 were also added.
Police said Deepak was subsequently arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as a preventive measure, citing concerns over a possible disturbance of peace and law and order. A police flag march was also conducted in the Kotdwar area as a security precaution.
Deepak had attracted attention in January after confronting members of the Bajrang Dal during a dispute involving an elderly Muslim shopkeeper in Kotdwar. During that confrontation, he identified himself as “Mohammad Deepak”, and a video of the incident subsequently circulated widely on social media.
The allegations against Deepak remain subject to the ongoing legal process.
