WASHINGTON, Sept. 22: The United States is open to holding talks with Iranian officials on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but no meeting has been scheduled, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday.
Speaking to NBC’s Today show, Rubio said Washington would consider such discussions if they offered a prospect of a positive outcome and helped advance US objectives. He emphasized that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a central US goal.
The comments come as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, creating an opportunity for diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran. Reuters reported that while discussions remain possible, there is currently no confirmed meeting between US and Iranian officials.
Iranian officials have also indicated that the UN gathering could provide an opportunity to revive diplomatic efforts, amid continuing tensions between the two countries
