Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday highlighted that the true measure of any educational institution lies in the quality of its research output and the achievements of its alumni.

Speaking at the University of Kashmir’s Alumni Meet 2025 in Srinagar, Abdullah praised the university for excelling on both fronts. He was joined at the event by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

“There are two key criteria to assess any educational institution — the scope and calibre of its research output, and the tangible accomplishments of its alumni. By both measures, the University of Kashmir is not behind any other university in the country,” the Chief Minister said.

He further lauded the university’s alumni, stating that they have made their mark in various fields, including law, politics, administration, medicine, social work, and business, earning national and international recognition.

“Several of the university’s alumni have excelled in diverse fields, earning respect both across India and globally,” Abdullah added.

Referring to the university’s contributions, the CM said it has played a crucial role in shaping careers and now it’s time for alumni to give back.

“Kashmir University has given you a lot. If you can return the favour, even occasionally, through your efforts and experience, it will greatly benefit current and future students,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, who also addressed the gathering, praised the rich civilisational and cultural legacy of Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that the region’s history goes beyond political dynasties and reflects a deep intellectual and philosophical heritage.

“The history of Kashmir is not merely a record of dynasties and rulers, but a chronicle of ideas, philosophers, and civilisation. From the verses of Lal Ded to Habba Khatun, Kashmir has deeply contributed to India’s cultural and intellectual traditions,” CJI Gavai said.                 (Media reports)
