New Delhi, Feb 25: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the development of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 1,677 crore.
The project marks a major step toward strengthening aviation infrastructure and enhancing connectivity in Kashmir. The scope of work also includes the construction of barracks for security personnel.
Operated by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force, the airport was designated as an international airport in 2005 and is located about 12 km from Srinagar city.
Spread across 73.18 acres, the new Civil Enclave will feature a state-of-the-art terminal building covering 71,500 square metres, including 20,659 square metres of the existing structure. The upgraded facility is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours, with an annual capacity of 10 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
The expanded apron will provide 15 aircraft parking bays, including one wide-body (Code E) bay — nine existing and six proposed. The 3,658m x 45m runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force.
The project also includes a multi-level car parking facility with space for 1,000 vehicles.
Architecturally, the new terminal will combine modern design with Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating traditional elements such as intricate woodwork and locally inspired craftsmanship. At the same time, it will ensure operational efficiency with streamlined passenger processing areas, spacious lounges, and advanced security and check-in facilities.
Sustainability is a key focus of the development. The project will feature advanced water harvesting systems, maximised natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, and the use of locally sourced eco-friendly materials to minimise its carbon footprint. It is targeted to achieve a prestigious 5-star GRIHA rating.
Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the expansion is expected to significantly boost tourism and economic growth by improving connectivity to major attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities, encourage investment, and strengthen Srinagar’s position as a leading tourist and economic destination.
The development of the Civil Enclave represents a transformative step toward delivering world-class infrastructure, enhancing passenger facilities, and showcasing the cultural and natural beauty of Kashmir to the world. (Agency)
