New framework could allow compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites, potentially expanding mobile connectivity in remote and underserved areas.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended a separate authorisation framework for satellite network providers and proposed allowing Direct-to-Device (D2D) services through satellite and terrestrial mobile spectrum.

The proposed changes could pave the way for compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites, potentially bringing mobile connectivity to remote and underserved regions where conventional cellular networks are unavailable.

Under the proposed Satellite Communication Network (SCN) Provider Authorisation, companies would be permitted to establish and operate satellite communication networks and sell network capacity to eligible telecom service providers. However, these providers would not be allowed to offer services directly to end users under this authorisation.

TRAI’s recommendations also propose enabling D2D connectivity by utilising satellite and terrestrial mobile spectrum, potentially creating new opportunities for seamless communication beyond traditional mobile network coverage.

However, the proposals are subject to government approval. The recommendations do not immediately authorise the commercial launch of Direct-to-Device services in India.
