Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi to convene special Parliament session over Pahalgam terror attack

In his letter, Gandhi said the attack had deeply outraged the nation and called for a unified political response.

“The terrorist attack in Pahalgam has outraged every Indian. At this critical time, India must show that we stand united against terrorism,” Gandhi wrote.

He further emphasised that the Opposition believes a special session would allow the elected representatives to display their unity and resolve.

“The Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened so that the representatives of the people can show their determination and solidarity. We urge that this session be convened at the earliest,” the letter added.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also wrote separately to Prime Minister Modi, reiterating the demand for a special parliamentary session to collectively respond to the attack.

Kharge stated that such a session would serve as a platform to present a united front and demonstrate collective resolve in the fight against terrorism. He underscored that national unity and solidarity are crucial at this juncture.

The demand comes amid heightened political and public focus on national security following the deadly April 22 attack, which has triggered nationwide outrage and mourning.

Earlier on Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly held a special session where a resolution condemning the Pahalgam attack was unanimously adopted. The resolution, moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, expressed solidarity with the victims and endorsed the diplomatic measures announced by the Union Government following the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting.

Following the adoption of the resolution, the assembly session was adjourned sine die.

The Pahalgam terror attack is being described as one of the deadliest incidents in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel. In response, India has initiated strong measures against Pakistan for its alleged support of cross-border terrorism.
