Rahul Gandhi Meets Congress Lok Sabha MPs Ahead of Waqf Bill Tabling in Parliament
New Delhi, Apr 3: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, held a meeting with party MPs at the Parliament Annexe on Wednesday, ahead of the tabling of the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025. The bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 and is expected to be a major point of debate in Parliament.
The Congress party, along with other opposition parties, has expressed strong opposition to the bill. Congress MP K Suresh stated that the INDIA bloc is united in opposing it. “Our members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee have also decided to oppose this bill. Yesterday, the INDIA bloc leaders unanimously agreed to resist the Waqf Amendment Bill,” he said.
Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav also reiterated his party’s stance, calling the amendments “dictatorial and unconstitutional.” He accused the ruling party of using its majority to push the bill through without proper discussions.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will move a motion for the consideration of amendments made by the Rajya Sabha to the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. This bill proposes further amendments to key banking legislations, including the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, and the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
Additionally, Union Ministers Jitendra Singh, L Murugan, and Ravneet Singh will table papers related to their respective ministries.
Both the BJP and Congress have issued whips to their MPs, ensuring full attendance as the Waqf Amendment Bill is expected to trigger heated debates in Parliament.
