Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday conducted raids at bookshops across Poonch district in connection with 25 books recently banned by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration in the Union Territory.
“Acting on directives to seize 25 books identified for promoting false narratives and secessionism, police carried out searches at multiple bookshops across the district,” a police officer said.
The officer added that during the inspections, none of the banned books were found at any of the locations visited.
“Bookshop owners were made aware of the directive and cautioned to ensure that such prohibited material is neither stocked nor sold in any form,” he said.
Last week, the Jammu and Kashmir administration had banned the publication of 25 books for allegedly promoting false narratives and glorifying terrorism.
As per an order issued by the Home Department, the banned books—including works by notable authors such as Moulana Moudadi, Arundhati Roy, A.G. Noorani, Victoria Schofield, and David Devadas—were found to promote secessionism in Jammu and Kashmir and have been declared forfeited under Section 98 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
