Jerusalem [Israel], Feb 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become a rare world leader to receive top awards from both Israel and Palestine.

On Wednesday, the Israeli Parliament conferred the ‘Speaker of the Knesset Medal’ on Prime Minister Modi following his address in the Knesset. This is the highest honour of the Knesset, and Modi is the first foreign leader to receive it. The medal recognises his exceptional personal leadership in strengthening strategic relations between India and Israel.

Earlier, in 2018, PM Modi was awarded the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian honour for foreign leaders.

After his speech in the Knesset, PM Modi interacted with members of the Israeli parliament, who took selfies and photographs with him. His speech received a standing ovation and rapturous applause.

In his address, PM Modi highlighted India’s admiration for Israel’s achievements and resilience.

“Long before we related to each other as modern states, we were linked by ties that go back more than two thousand years. The Book of Esther refers to India as Hodu. The Talmud records trade with India in ancient times,” he said.

“Jewish merchants travelled across sea routes connecting the Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean. They sought opportunity and dignity, and in India, they became one of us. Jewish communities have lived in India without fear of persecution or discrimination, preserving their faith while fully participating in society. That record is a source of pride for us,” he added.

PM Modi also highlighted the people-to-people ties that form the foundation of India-Israel relations.

“When I first visited Israel in 2006, there were only a handful of Yoga centres. Today, Yoga is practised in almost every neighbourhood, and interest in Ayurveda is growing. I invite young Israelis to travel to India to experience the dynamism of our society and the benefits of holistic wellness,” he said.

He further mentioned that the Indian Parliament has established a Parliamentary Friendship Group for Israel, inviting Israeli MPs to visit India and engage in more exchanges. (Agency)
