According to official sources, the fire broke out in the upper reaches of Sigdi Bhatta some 35 KM from District HQ Kishtwar during the evening hours of Wednesday (17th December) and soon engulfed a large stretch of forest land. The affected area is known for its rich forest wealth and biodiversity, making the incident particularly alarming. Forest Department teams, along with local administration officials, rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the blaze.

Firefighting operations are currently underway, though difficult terrain, lack of motorable roads, and steep slopes are posing major challenges in containing the fire. Forest guards, local people and fire watchers are making strenuous efforts to create fire lines and prevent the flames from spreading further into adjoining forest compartments and nearby habitations.

Officials stated that no loss of human life has been reported so far; however, extensive damage to forest resources, including trees, shrubs, and wildlife habitat, is feared. The fire has also caused severe air pollution in the surrounding areas, affecting visibility and posing health risks to residents, especially children and the elderly.

Preliminary assessment suggests that the fire may have been caused due to human negligence, such as discarded burning material or intentional setting of fire for clearing land, though the exact cause will be ascertained after a detailed investigation. The district administration has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and refrain from any activities that could trigger forest fires.

The authorities have also urged villagers and trekkers to immediately report any signs of fire to the Forest Department or local police. Additional manpower and resources are being mobilized to bring the situation under control at the earliest.

Meanwhile, senior officials are closely monitoring the situation, and a detailed damage assessment will be conducted once the fire is fully extinguished. The incident once again highlights the growing menace of forest fires in hilly regions and underscores the urgent need for stronger preventive measures and public awareness to protect fragile forest ecosystems.
