New Delhi, Feb 19: A man from Jammu and Kashmir was arrested near the Red Fort area for allegedly impersonating an officer of the National Investigation Agency and duping economically vulnerable families on the promise of securing jobs, police said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Mudassar, a resident of Pulwama, was detained during routine patrolling by a team from Kotwali police station. A black Hyundai Santro with a Jammu and Kashmir registration number was found parked under suspicious circumstances near Delhi Chalo Park behind the Red Fort.
Police found Mudassar along with a minor inside the vehicle. During questioning, he produced an identity card resembling that of the National Investigation Agency, which officers found suspicious. Both were taken to the police station for further interrogation.
Preliminary investigation suggested that Mudassar had allegedly been targeting financially vulnerable families in Jammu and Kashmir, promising them employment opportunities in Delhi in return for money. He had reportedly taken an advance from the minor’s family after assuring them of a job and brought the boy to the national capital.
Police said they left Kashmir on February 12 and reached Delhi the following night, staying at a guest house in the Jama Masjid area. However, the accused failed to provide any proof of job arrangements.
A joint probe involving the Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau and the concerned central agency confirmed that the identity card was forged and had not been issued by the NIA.
A case has been registered and further investigation is in progress, officials said. (Agencies)
