The demand for establishing a National Law University (NLU) in the Jammu region gained fresh momentum as Leader of Opposition in J&K Assembly Sunil Sharma and MLA Kishtwar Shagun Parihar extended their support to the ongoing students’ movement.

Sunil Sharma recently visited the University of Jammu, where he addressed students protesting for an NLU in Jammu. His interaction with the agitating students and words of encouragement strengthened the collective demand for equitable educational infrastructure in the region. Students said Sharma’s presence reaffirmed their aspiration for academic growth, improved access to quality legal education, and regional balance.

Meanwhile, MLA Kishtwar Shagun Parihar had already taken up the issue at the national level. A couple of weeks ago, she met Union Law Minister in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum seeking establishment of a National Law University for her Kishtwar constituency as well as for the larger Jammu region.

Students leading the movement said they were grateful for Sunil Sharma’s engagement and support, adding that the demand for an NLU in Jammu is not merely a request but a rightful aspiration of the youth of the region.

With senior political leaders now backing the cause, the students hope that the Union Government will take an early decision to set up a National Law University in the Jammu region.
