JAMMU, February 12: Leader of Opposition in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly, Sunil Sharma, on Wednesday rushed to Assam amid the ongoing J&K Assembly session to attend critical election engagements, underlining the Bharatiya Janata Party’s focus on the northeastern state where it is seeking a third consecutive term.

Sharma, who has been appointed as Co-Incharge for the Assam Assembly elections, chaired a meeting of the Election Management Committee of the Borkhol Assembly segment in Cachar district. Sharing details on his official social media page, he wrote, “Chaired a meeting of election management committee of Borkhol assembly segments in Kachhar, Assam. Confident that Assam will reaffirm its trust in BJP, driving progress and development.”
The important political assignment entrusted to Sharma reflects the central leadership’s confidence in him and is seen as a testimony to his growing stature within the party. Political observers believe this signals that more organisational responsibilities may be placed on the LoP in the near future.
During his recent visits to Assam, Sharma has shared the stage with senior BJP leaders including BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other top party figures. These appearances have been aimed at consolidating voter support and strengthening the party’s organisational outreach ahead of the Assembly polls scheduled next month.
In the run-up to the polls, Assam has witnessed a series of high-profile visits by the BJP’s central leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a two-day visit to Assam that included a massive roadshow in Guwahati and highlighted cultural unity and development initiatives. He is also scheduled to return to the state on February 14 to flag off major infrastructure and outreach programmes as part of the BJP’s election push.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also undertaken a significant two-day tour of Assam, where he laid foundation stones for key government projects, interacted with local communities, and held organisational meetings with party workers to sharpen election strategy.

The BJP has set an ambitious target of winning 100 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, intensifying efforts at the grassroots level ahead of the polls.
