The Jammu-Rajouri National Highway was blocked on Tuesday due to a landslide, bringing traffic to a halt. Restoration work is currently underway to clear the debris and resume vehicle movement.
Heavy monsoon rains continue to lash the country, with hilly regions bearing the brunt of the impact. Uttarakhand has been particularly affected, experiencing cloudbursts, floods, and landslides that have caused significant loss of life and property.
In Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, roads remain blocked at Nandprayag following a landslide triggered by recent rains, days after a devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi. District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari told ANI that efforts are ongoing to reopen the blocked roads, though other routes in the district remain smooth.
The bridge connecting Uttarkashi to Harsil has been reconstructed to ensure smooth movement of machinery and relief materials in the aftermath of the cloudburst and flash floods that wreaked havoc in Dharali and Harsil villages on August 5. A massive mudslide hit Dharali in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, sending debris and water rushing through settlements and sweeping away several houses.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police Deepam Seth recently reviewed the ongoing relief and rescue operations under the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The high-level meeting, held at Police Headquarters in Dehradun, included senior police officers and officials from SDRF, fire service, PAC, telecom, and other departments involved in rescue efforts.
DGP Seth praised the coordination and dedication of the teams working at the disaster sites and discussed plans for the next phase of relief operations in Uttarkashi. (Agencies)
