Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Saturday paid tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, during his visit to the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, on the occasion of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas.

“I feel proud and fortunate to be here on the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas. Today is a day to remember the bravehearts who laid down their lives in the line of duty. This is a moment in history that future generations must know about — how our soldiers sacrificed everything for the country. The nation gives us everything, and we must also do our part,” Gupta said.

Paying respect to the soldiers and their families, the LG added that the valour of Indian Army personnel would forever remain etched in the hearts of the people.

“Their sacrifices will always stay in our hearts. I bow down to the soldiers and their families. Leaders from Delhi, including Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Sanjay Seth, are also present here — I thank them for joining in this tribute,” he said.

Reflecting on the inspiration drawn from stories of courage, Gupta remarked, “Being here allows us to witness the bravery of our soldiers and understand history firsthand. Families shouldn’t just hope that heroes like Bhagat Singh are born in others’ homes — we must encourage courage and patriotism in our own homes too.”

Earlier in the day, the families of the soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil War paid heartfelt tributes at the War Memorial as part of the anniversary events.

The commemorative programme, held in Drass town of Kargil, witnessed the participation of a large number of people. Families of fallen soldiers took turns to offer floral tributes and honour the memory of the nation’s heroes.

Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, marks India’s victory in Operation Vijay in 1999, when the Indian Armed Forces successfully recaptured strategic heights from Pakistani infiltrators. The day stands as a solemn reminder of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. (Sources)
