Bandipora, October 12: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Party Chief Sheeban Ashai has strongly criticised the alleged administrative neglect and prolonged delays in bridge construction across the Sumbal division of Bandipora district, warning that thousands of residents continue to risk their lives crossing the Jhelum River in wooden boats.
Ashai demanded immediate construction of permanent bridges at Banyari, Tundpora-Hakbara and Asham, along with the long-pending Sumbal market footbridge, accusing successive governments of failing to fulfil promises of safe connectivity.
Highlighting the plight of Banyari residents, Ashai said villagers have waited more than 15 years for a bridge connecting Banyari Sharqi and Banyari Garbi. He claimed that hundreds of schoolchildren are forced to cross the river daily, while several lives have reportedly been lost in boating accidents.
He also raised concerns over the Sumbal market footbridge, demolished in 2013 after developing cracks, which he said remains incomplete despite the project being allotted in 2014.
At Tundpora-Hakbara, Ashai demanded approval of a proposed 240-metre bridge estimated to cost over ₹10 crore, while calling for motorable connectivity in Asham to ensure timely access to hospitals during emergencies.
Referring to the tragic 2024 Srinagar boat accident, Ashai warned that continued delays could expose more residents to similar dangers.
“Connectivity across Jhelum is not a luxury; it is a fundamental right of the residents of Sumbal,” Ashai asserted.
He urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to prioritise the pending projects and ensure safe passage for residents, particularly schoolchildren, without further delay.
