J&K Assembly Holds Special Session to Condemn Pahalgam Terror Attack

In response to the widespread national outrage following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly convened a special session on Monday to express condolences for the victims and strongly condemn the attack.

The session saw the attendance of several prominent figures, including Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, Independent MLA from Baramulla Sheikh Abdul Rashid, AAP J&K President Mehraj Malik, National Conference leader Mubarak Gul, J&K Minister Javed Dar, Peoples Democratic Party leader Waheed Para, and Awami Ittehad Party leader Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, among others.

Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma emphasized that the session’s primary goal was to mourn the loss of the 26 victims, who had come to Pahalgam as tourists, and to show unity in the fight against terrorism. Sharma highlighted that the session would not include political discussions or divisive rhetoric, stating that it aimed to demonstrate support for the Union Government in its efforts to combat terrorism.

“The session’s objective is clear: to express our condolences for the 26 lives lost and to stand united in opposition to terrorism. We are here to send a message of support to the Union Government in their fight against terror,” Sharma said.

When asked about potential resolutions during the session, Sharma mentioned that while he was unsure of the specifics, his party had supported the resolution presented by the Chief Minister during the all-party meeting.

Awami Ittehad Party leader Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh called for dialogue with Pakistan, stating that peace could only be achieved through talks. He also suggested the creation of a memorial for the pony handler Adil, who died protecting others during the attack, and proposed naming a bravery award in his honor.

“We believe talks with Pakistan are necessary for a lasting solution. Condemning the attack is not enough; we must ensure a memorial for Adil and recognize his bravery,” Sheikh said.

AAP MLA Mehraaj Malik emphasized that India must respond decisively to Pakistan’s actions. He advocated for strength over diplomatic negotiations and expressed concerns about the ongoing tensions between the two countries.

“We need to give Pakistan a strong response rather than engage in endless talks. The world is united in condemning this attack, and it’s crucial that we take action to prevent future incidents,” Malik stated.

The Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, is one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel. In response to the recent terror attack, India has taken stern measures against Pakistan for its alleged support of cross-border terrorism.
