Jhelum Water Levels Stabilize: Below Danger Mark at Sangam, Ram Munshi Bagh; Pampore still at High

Srinagar: Jhelum River showed signs of stabilizing on Friday, with water levels at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh receding below the danger mark. However, the water level at Pampore remains above the critical threshold.

An official from the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department told the Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that while the situation has improved, residents should continue to remain vigilant as water levels in the valley remain prone to fluctuations.

“No breaches were reported along any part of the Jhelum overnight, and more than two feet of water has receded at Ram Munshi Bagh,” the official said.

As per the I&FC’s latest gauge readings at 8:00 am:

  • Sangam: 20.18 ft (Danger level: 25 ft)Below danger mark
  • Pampore: 5.74 m (Danger level: 5.0 m)Above danger mark
  • Ram Munshi Bagh: 20.49 ft (Danger level: 21 ft)Below danger mark

Other key river levels recorded:

  • Asham: 13.99 ft (Danger level: 16.5 ft)
  • Wullar Lake: 1577.00 m (Danger level: 1578.00 m)

Tributary levels were all reported below danger marks:

  • Vaishow Nallah (Khudwani): 6.04 m (Danger level: 8.50 m)
  • Rambiyara Nallah (Wachi): 2.32 m (Danger level: 5.7 m)
  • Lidder Nallah (Batkoot): 0.51 m (Danger level: 1.65 m)
  • Sindh Nallah (Doderhama): 2.00 m (Danger level: 3.9 m)

Chief Engineer I&FC Kashmir, Showkat Hussain, confirmed that while the Jhelum is flowing below the danger mark at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh, the situation at Pampore still warrants close monitoring.

“Residents are advised to stay away from riverbanks and strictly adhere to safety advisories. Quick Response Teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas to respond promptly to any sudden changes in water levels,” he added. —(KNO)
