India Uses Harpy Drones to Cripple Pakistan’s Air Defence; Operation Sindoor Strikes Continue
New Delhi, May 8: The Indian Armed Forces deployed Harpy drones—designed specifically to neutralise enemy radar systems—to strike Pakistan’s air defence infrastructure as part of the ongoing Operation Sindoor. The drone action resulted in the successful neutralisation of Pakistan’s air defence system in Lahore, defence sources confirmed.
The Harpy drone, equipped with anti-radiation seekers and high-explosive warheads, is optimised for Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) operations. Capable of autonomously hunting and striking high-value emitting targets, the Harpy operates effectively in GPS-denied environments and in all weather conditions.
Following India’s precision strikes on nine major terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) on May 7, Pakistan attempted a retaliatory strike using drones and missiles targeting military installations across Northern and Western India. Areas such as Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj were among those targeted. However, these attempts were successfully thwarted by India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems, including the S-400 ‘Sudarshan Chakra’.
On Wednesday morning, the Indian military launched further counter-operations targeting radar systems and air defence assets inside Pakistan. Among these, the air defence setup in Lahore was confirmed to have been disabled.
The earlier Indian strikes destroyed terrorist infrastructure belonging to proscribed groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Hizbul Mujahideen. Key sites hit included locations in Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sarjal, and Mehmoona Joya inside Pakistan, and terror hubs in Bhimber, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad in PoJK.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has escalated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC), firing mortars and heavy artillery across Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors. The cross-border shelling has claimed 16 civilian lives, including women and children.
India reiterated its commitment to avoid further escalation but stated that continued Pakistani aggression would invite a strong and proportionate response.
